Wireless technologies overview

LoRaWAN

  • Non-licensed ISM frequency spectrum - 868MHz or 433MHz
  • Up to 5km range in urban areas amd up to 20km open space (rural)
  • Max size of one message - depending on signal quality: 51 bytes for low signal, 222 bytes for good signal
  • Max number of messages per day (limited by EU legislation of 1% duty cycle):
    • worst case low signal: 300 (about once every 5 minutes)
    • best case good signal: 2300 (about once every 40 seconds)
  • Does not require SIM card
  • Maximum battery life @16Ah 3.6V LiSOCl2 battery: 40.000 messages - also depends on signal quality
  • You can build your own LoRaWAN network using standard LoRaWAN access points / gateways such as Kerlink, Lairs or others

Sigfox

  • Non-licensed ISM frequency spectrum - 868MHz
  • Up to 5km range in urban areas amd up to 50km open space (rural)
  • Max size of one message: 12 bytes
  • Max number of messages per day (limited by EU legislation of 1% duty cycle): 140 messages uplink, 4 messages downlink per device
  • Maximum battery life @16Ah 3.6V LiSOCl2 battery: 50.000 messages
  • Does not require SIM card
  • You must contract your local Sigfox provider - see https://partners.sigfox.com/companies/sigfox-operator - this is a paid service

NB-IoT

  • Tested on Vodafone and T-Mobile networks on band 20
  • Internal tuned antenna
  • Maximum packet size: 512 bytes
  • Maximum battery life @16Ah 3.6V LiSOCl2 battery: 30.000 messages - also depends on signal quality
  • Requires SIM card or SIM chip
  • You must use SIM card from your local mobile operator to connect to the network - this is a paid service
